Chicago’s Near North neighborhood is the very model of sophisticated urban living. Bounded on three sides by Lake Michigan and both branches of the Chicago River, the area offers a wide contrast in lifestyles ranging from the glamorous hustle and bustle of world-famous North Michigan Avenue to the artistic environs of River North. The Near North area is also blessed with the string of beaches and parks along the lakeshore, as well as access to the southern end of Lincoln Park.

Old Town is a quaint community of quiet residential streets and vibrant commercial and entertainment areas. Streeterville, located east of Michigan Avenue and north of the Chicago River, was actually (for a short time) an independent territory claimed by the area’s colorful founder, “Cap” Streeter. Today Streeterville is home to some of Chicago’s most valuable real estate, including Michigan Avenue and one of Chicago’s most popular tourist attractions, Navy Pier. Housing in Streeterville includes vintage and newly constructed high-rises and mid-rise condominiums. The neighborhood is also home to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Northwestern University Medical Center and the university’s downtown campus, as well as the Northwestern University Law School and the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business.

Chicago’s Gold Coast is one of the city’s most exclusive neighborhoods, encompassing the Magnificent Mile of North Michigan Avenue, including such high-profile shopping destinations such as Water Tower Place and 900 North Michigan Avenue. The trendy boutiques of Oak Street are also here, along with Chicago’s famed Oak Street Beach. With the exception of the aristocratic single-family residences in the Astor Street area, most residents live in high-rise condos and co-ops. The artistic River North neighborhood rivals New York City’s SoHo in the number of high-end art galleries, and offers a multitude of new high-rise condo and townhouse developments. River North is also the location of many of the city’s finest restaurants, and an exciting after-hours club and entertainment scene. River West, just across the Chicago River, is a newer neighborhood brimming with excitement and potential. The community abounds with new condo and townhouse developments, as well as with commercial properties converted to residential use.
